NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC Congress (NDC) former Member of Parliament for La Dadekotopon, Nii Amasah Namoale has said the party will set itself up for more humiliating defeat in the 2020 election if former President John Mahama is imposed on the party as flagbearer.
His comments follow the endorsement by all 10 regional chairpersons of the main opposition NDC backing the candidature of former President Mahama for the 2020 general election.
At a meeting held on Thursday, November 9, 2017 between the former leader and the Regional Chairpersons of the NDC party at Cantonments in Accra, the ten officials said Mr. Mahama must “consider the requests of the teeming supporters” and lead the party into contest in the next elections.
But commenting on the issue, Hon. Nii Amasa Namoale who until this week nursed the ambition to be the NDC’s Flagbearer in the 2020 general election, condemned the action of the Regional Chairmen said such moves will divide the party and rather prolong its stay in opposition.
“When people try as much as possible in diverse ways to impose a candidate on the party, there’s a bigger disgrace awaiting us in 2020. God has a way of choosing whoever he wants to be a leader. It’s a known fact that lots of our party members and supporters didn’t vote in the 2016 election due to apathy which contributed to the NDC’s loss. Instead of working to get these people back on board to vote for us next time, we’re rather discouraging them to go away again. Even if it’s John Mahama who’ll eventually be elected as Flagbearer, let’s choose him in the right way so that no one has any hard feelings. What these Chairmen did can cause division in the party, but let’s forgive them and move on as a party because party cohesion is very important.”
