RESIDENTS IN communities along the Eastern Region section of the Accra- Kumasi Highway have expressed worry over alarming rate of goat theft in their communities.
The communities are Atwemamena, Aboabo, Anyinasin, Apedwa, Asafo, Pechi, Fishercamp, Aframase and Teacher Mante.
It is unclear the modus operandi the syndicate uses but residents suspect they strangle the goats after catching them in their pens and while roaming, hence it is difficult to notice them.
The goat thieves sell the stolen goats to chop bar and restaurant operators in the cities. Mr Yaw Ansah, an opinion leader in Atwemamena, one of the affected communities, said more than 20 goats had been stolen from the community in recent times.
He said the community had decided to form a watchdog committee as a result of the continuous raid, to curb the menace.
One of the affected farmers said “they have stolen all our goats; I intentionally fed two goats to celebrate the Christmas and sell one for school fees of my child but they have both been stolen.”
A few weeks ago, the Suhum Police Command busted two suspects believed to be part of the goat-stealing syndicate at about 3a.m. when bolting with six stolen goats from Aframanse, near Nkawkaw.
A watchdog committee at Teacher Mante has also arrested some goat thieves in the area.
