THE PRESIDENT of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) Mr Ben Nunoo Mensah said that the project for the OlympAfrica site at Amasaman will help to develop the youth interested in sports.
Mr Mensah told theDAILY HERITAGE yesterday at Amasaman,it is important to put up sports facilities that will help the youth to train and excel in their various sports disciplines.
He appealed to private institutions who are interested in developing youth sports to come on board to champion the project to make it a success.
According to him, the GOC is looking forward to seeking funds to support the project instead of depending on government that is why few companies like Dangote and GNPC have been contacted to help fund the project.
Mr Nunoo Mensah continued that companies that would fund the project will have their names adapted.
Mr S.M Quarteywho is the architect in charge of the site also said the plan for the site was to put adequate facilities to cater for games that would be held there.
He said the facility will have a standard sized football field with a tartan or laterite track around it, multi-sports courts, an astro turf pitch as well as hostel to camp the atheletes.
The architect said that there will be offices that would run the affairs of the sports arena as well as a commercial area that would be used to generate some funds for the facility to help maintain the facility and said they are looking to put up an arena worthy of international practices.
The Municipal Chief Executive Mr Clement Wilkinson expressed his joy at being able to call upon Decker engineering and construction limited to for them to begin works on the Amasaman site because the land had been left unattended to for so long.
He said he could see the eagerness in the youth to participate in sporting activities even in poor conditions. He said the facility would serve all interested persons well because it would be of a high standard.
The Assembly man for area Mr LoveAlista said the upcoming project is good news to the community. He said a lot of prayers have to go into such work because when it turns out successfully, the whole community would have succeeded.
