UNLIKE IN the immediate past when the health status of the late President John Evans Atta Mills was shrouded in secrecy by his handlers, the communications directorate under the Presidency of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has revealed that Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was on Friday taken ill and attended to by his doctors.
According to Mr Eugene Arhin, the Director of Communications at the Flagstaff House, the seat of government, Dr Bawumia in the early hours of Friday, January 19, 2018, reported feeling unwell.
“He was attended to by his doctors, and is currently undergoing medical tests and observation. Any further information will be duly communicated,” he stated.
The public disclosure of the health status of the Vice President was unusual in the political climate of Ghana.
The case of the late President Mills readily comes to mind. His heath status was very poorly managed by the communications unit at the then Presidency.
Though some dirty politicians played infantile politics with the health status of the late Prof., it behooved the handlers to make his health status public because he was human and was prone to sickness.
In advanced democracies such as the United States of America and the United Kingdom, the health statuses of Presidents are disclosed because the citizens understand that those Presidents are also human beings.
The DAILY HERITAGE commends the communications team for the novelty. We urge the regime to make full disclosure of the health statuses of the President, Vice and other key members of government to enhance our governance system.
