ERNEST KOFI Asante, a bodyguard of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Flagstaff House, the seat of government, has said his desire to contest for the position of organiser in the impending New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency elections at the Ayawaso Central Constituency is to lobby for jobs for the youth.
Mr Asante, affectionately called Toroo, said his desire to contest was to ensure that he used his friendship and closeness with the leadership to lobby for opportunities for the youth in the constituency.
The 44-year-old, who has served the party since 1992, has been the main man for many high profile personalities of the party including President Akufo-Addo whom he guards currently at the Presidency.
Speaking to the DAILY HERITAGE, Toroo said he had also served the party and would represent the grassroots and that the current organiser had lost touch with the people.
“I have been serving the party for a very long time. At my early days, I guarded the late Mrs Hawa Yakubu, the then Women and Children’s Minister, Sheik I. C. Quaye, former Regional Minister, Prof. Adu Boahen, one time flagbearer of the NPP and George Isaac Armoh.
“I’m currently a guard at the Presidency. For the past eight years since 2008, I have been with President Akufo-Addo, guarding him.”
He said “the current organiser has done nothing significant for the past 12 years. No effort has been made to improve on that. I can lobby. I‘m well known and I have served the party well. I have charisma to bring development to the constituency.”
Toroo has also been the main guard for veteran hiplife musician Michael Kwabena Okyere Darko popularly known as Obrafour.
Mr Asante, who has also guarded one of the NPP Volta Regional Ministers, is appealing to the leadership of the constituency to make the Voters Register transparent enough for all contesting candidates before the day of voting. He urged them to give a fair playing field to all contesting candidates in the constituency.
