A FORMER chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Krowor Constituency, Mr John Manu, who is aspiring for the party’s Greater Accra Regional treasurer position, has suggested that the party’s regional bureaus should raise their own funds instead of being dependent on the national headquarters.
According to him, the proposal will end the current system where the various regional branches wholly rely on the national headquarters for funds to carry out their activities.
In an interview with the DAILY HERITAGE, Mr Manu explained that the NPP had reached a stage where the regional branches should be able to raise some funds on their own and abolish the system of renting premises for use as their offices.
He said “my main intention is to raise funds for the party in the Greater Accra Region; that is why I chose that specific aspect to raise funds.
“These things are done during the formation of parties. We look at the party as one that is maturing and I believe that we are matured enough to do that even at the constituency level.”
According to the former Krowor NPP chairman, the proposal, if implemented effectively, would give the regional branches of the party some financial strength to support the activities of the weak branches.
The aspiring regional treasurer also proposed member contribution as a platform to raise the funds.
“We have enough members in the Greater Accra Region to raise any fund that we anticipate; the members are ready to contribute,” he said.
According him, party members he had shared his vision with lauded the idea and pledged their commitment towards ensuring its sustainability to help the party blossom.
“Fantastic, everybody who listened to this idea concluded that with this vision we are on the right path. The era of going to somebody for funds must be over.
“The era of more funds being channelled from the national headquarters to the regions should be stopped. Greater Accra can marshal resources from within to fund the party in the region; we don’t need to rely on the central party for resources.
“I also intend to raise enough money to abolish the system of renting premises as offices in all the constituencies in the Greater Accra Region,” he stated.
The aspirant underscored the need for the NPP, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to protect party funds by ensuring transparent and meticulous disbursement.
Touching on his chances of becoming the next Greater Accra Regional treasurer of the party, the businessman said members had embraced his candidature and his vision and so was optimistic of winning the upcoming regional election.
