Consider persons with disabilities in NABCO – ILAPI

THE EXECUTIVE Director of Institute for Liberty and Policy Innovation (ILAPI-Ghana), Mr Peter Bismark Kwofie, has called on policy makers to consider persons with disabilities in the Nation Builders Corps.

According to him, NABCO, as an employment policy for unemployed graduates in Ghana, has the potential to train and build the capacity of its target group to help create wealth for them.

Mr Kwofie said unemployment is a threat to economic progress, security and job creation so it had been a priority of the government to see to it that the youth were gainfully employed to improve upon their standards of living.

“It is in this vein that NABCO was launched.  However, this employment policy disenfranchises and short-changes people with disability.

“The overarching principle of the 2030 Agenda is ‘leave no one behind’ but it looks like the policy is leaving persons with disabilities behind. Paragraph 23 of Agenda 2030 recognises that ‘more than 80% of persons with disabilities live in poverty.’ This places persons with disabilities at the centre of poverty alleviation and employment,” he stated.

The Director said Goal 8 of the Sustainable Development Goals places emphasis on promoting sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.

He stated that that called for the need for all the seven employment modules of NABCO to equally benefit persons with disabilities.

“It is, therefore, prudent to leave no one behind so that we can all equally create wealth to support the growth of the economy because disability is indeed not inability.”
