MTN GHANA Foundation, as part of its focus areas in health, education and economic empowerment, has begun the construction of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and e-Learning Centre for Ebenezer Senior High School (SHS) in Dansoman in the Ablekuma West constituency.

The centre, which will equip the students in the school and other schools in its environs, will include a Robotic Laboratory as part of the e-learning project to help students upgrade themselves in the technological designs and innovative development.

Mr Samuel Koranteng, Corporate Services Executive of MTN Ghana, explained that the centre has a capacity for 100 users and the cost is about GH¢800,000.00.

According to him, the Dansoman community is the largest estate in West Africa with about 20 schools with just one community library, which, to him, is not the best.

“We looked at the need for such a project here and also the community reached out to the Foundation and sent out our consultants to access the need and the project and we realize the library facility in Dansoman, which is located around the Keep Fit area, is too small for such a community and so that is what informed us the MTN Ghana Foundation board to take on this project,” he explained.

Mrs Ursula Owusu Ekuful, Minister of Communication, said she was sure that very soon the young people in the community would be building their own robots but without  them being exposed to emerging technology, it would be difficult to achieve what one is capable of.

“We are very excited for this project and looking forward to its completion in June. There are lots of computer labs and libraries around but this will be the first robotic centre attached to it and it can serve almost all the western part of Accra,” she said.

The Communication Minister pointed out that the challenge she could foresee was the cost of data and so the ministry was considering extending free Wifi to the SHS utilizing area.

Mr Kofi Mensah, Headmaster of Ebenezer Senior High School, said the school was happy for the project because the books in its library were outmoded.

He expressed the hope that the e-library could be used to train the students as expected.
